Outreach
Observing, Sharing, Teaching, and Promoting Astronomy
Astronomy On Wheels (AOW) is a club sponsored education community out-reach program that brings astronomy to the public. It was also the first astronomy educational out-reach program in the greater Houston area.
Since 2010, FBAC has held over 288 events with over 70,065 students, teachers and parents participating.
FBAC members can volunteer to participate in AOW events, which are typically held on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings during the school year.
The George Observatory is located in Brazos Bend State Park and is owned and operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There are three domes – the East dome, Research Dome, and West Dome.
FBAC owns and operates the telescope in the East Dome and provides assistance to HMNS for the other two domes.
Weather permitting, stargazing events are held at the George on Saturday evenings. These events are open to the public, requiring purchase of tickets from HMNS. Over 200,000 people have participated in the events at the George.
FBAC holds meetings each month, typically on the evening of the 3rd Friday. Each meeting has one or more presentations, cover astronomy topics of interest to beginners through experts. The meetings are open to the public and are free.
FBAC provides Outreach programs with the support of FBAC member volunteers. Outreach programs are funded through a combination of annual membership dues and gifts from the community.
If you are interested in supporting FBAC’s Outreach programs, please consider joining FBAC as a member or making a gift to FBAC.
