Donations Provide Important Upgrades to the Main Research Dome

How the 2009 Sam's Club Community Grant is being utilized.

The FBAC Image Computer in the Research Dome at the George Observatory has been upgraded with a new video card and is now set up with dual monitors. The high definition Samsung 25-inch monitor (and dual monitor set up) has already turned out to be an even better teaching tool than we expected. The FBAC Image Computer and high definition 25-inch monitor were part of the 2009 Community Grant that Sam’s Club donated to FBAC. And, Best Buy donated two 20-inch extension full motion wall mounts for the dual monitor setup to FBAC in 2009.

Originally we were going to mirror the same image on the two monitors, but the new 25-inch high definition monitor is so dramatic that it was decided to “extend” the screens so that we can show multiple and different images on both monitors. As an example we can show a photograph of the object we are viewing on the 25-inch monitor, and then also show another photo or even a slide show on the 19-inch monitor.

Research Dome monitors The upgraded setup with dual HD monitors for the image computer on the left, and the control computer HD monitor on the right are shown without red filters. HD computer monitors are very useful tools in helping visitors to learn, explore and understand the night sky.

2009 - Sam's Club #4712 Grant for $1000

Sam's Club Giving Program Contribution 9/17/09 - Sam's Club #4712 presented FBAC with a Sam's Club Giving Program Contribution for $1000

UPDATE - With the 2009 Sam's Club #4712 Grant for $1000, FBAC was able upgrade the aging imaging computer in the Research Dome at the George Observatory. A new ZT Systems Computer, Dell Monitor, Battery Backup, & Power Strip completes the new "FBAC Image Computer" in the Research Dome. And, Sam's Club donated an Air Mover for the Research Dome and a Utility Fan for the East Dome. The fans will make it much more comfortable to visitors.

New FBAC Image Computer The new "FBAC Image Computer" (lower left) was purchased through the Sam's Club Community Grant for 2009. Imaging computer purchase included: ZT Systems Computer, Dell Monitor, Battery Backup, & Power Strip for the separate Telescope Control Computer. The Telescope Control Computer Monitor was part of the donation by Sam's Club to FBAC for 2008.

Air mover Close-up photo of the new "Air Mover" for the research dome, which was purchased by FBAC through the Sam's Club Community Grant for 2009. The "Air Mover" puts out significantly more air than a regular fan, and is much quieter. A utility fan (not pictured) for the East Dome was also purchased through the 2009 Sam's Club Community Grant.
